Job Description

Staff Accountant | Tampa, FL | Compensation: $70k-90k commensurate with experience + Full Benefits

Step into an ownership-level accounting role at a fast-moving, PE-backed company where your technical fundamentals, process improvement instincts, and desire to build something right will directly shape the trajectory of the entire accounting function. This is not a role for someone who wants to maintain the status quo — it's for an accountant who sees a messy chart of accounts and wants to fix it, who closes a set of books cleanly and takes real pride in that, and who is ready to go deep on one company rather than spread thin across many.

The company is in the middle of meaningful infrastructure-building: formalizing close cycles, implementing new payroll capabilities, and constructing the KPI and reporting framework that a scaling business demands. The AP and AR processes are ripe for streamlining and automation, and the right person will treat that as an opportunity rather than a burden. There is a clear path for the right hire to grow into a senior accounting leadership role as the finance function expands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and execute all job cost entries from field reports and vendor invoices; reconcile to internal job reporting.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and clear the AP/AR subledger to the general ledger each close cycle.
  • Post adjusting journal entries under the direction of senior finance leadership.
  • Support preparation and maintenance of the WIP schedule, developing fluency in percentage-of-completion mechanics and their impact on the financials.
  • Maintain a clean, current, and fully reconciled general ledger across all accounts.
  • Drive the month-end close toward a day-10 cycle through process discipline and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in producing polished, board-ready monthly financial packages for leadership review.
  • Own end-to-end AP and AR workflows — identify bottlenecks, manual touchpoints, and redundancies; build toward a faster, more scalable cycle.
  • Review and post AP invoices with proper job coding, obtain approvals, and execute payment runs through vendor portals and banking platforms.
  • Monitor AR aging weekly; flag balances approaching 60 days and prepare aging summaries to support collections follow-up.
  • Reconcile credit card accounts, ACH payments, and all electronic payment activity monthly.
  • Review invoices to ensure billing stays within project scope; flag and dispute overcharges as needed.
  • Become a power user of the company's construction ERP — full training will be provided.
  • Build and maintain a month-end close checklist with clear task ownership, deadlines, and sign-off requirements; document SOPs for AP, AR, payroll, and reconciliation workflows that allow the function to scale and support future team members.
  • Assume ownership of the payroll processing cycle once the new module goes live; reconcile labor hours and payroll to job cost and the WIP report.
  • Compile weekly flash report data, assist in maintaining the 13-week cash flow model, and pull ad hoc reports as requested by senior leadership.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of accounting experience — industry, a mix of public and private, or a smaller public accounting firm all considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA candidate or CPA preferred.
  • Experience within the construction industry or at a high-growth PE backed company a major plus
  • Strong command of fundamental accounting: accruals, reconciliations, debits and credits, and financial statement relationships.
  • Process-improvement orientation — you notice inefficiencies, propose solutions, and follow through on making things better.
  • Proficiency in Excel — pivot tables, lookups, and daily data manipulation are second nature.
  • Meticulous attention to detail — you don't move on until the numbers tie.
  • Clear written and verbal communication — you can translate a reconciling item for a non-accountant audience.

Why you'll love working here

  • A true ownership seat — this is not a support role. You will build and run the accounting function with real authority and visibility.
  • Fast pace, real deadlines. Day-10 close, weekly reporting, and monthly board packages are real targets with real expectations.
  • Supportive, collaborative leadership that is actively invested in your growth and professional development.
  • PE-backed environment that demands clean, timely, defensible numbers — habits that will sharpen your skills and serve your career for decades.
  • A clear path to senior accounting leadership as the finance function and team grow alongside the business.
  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with your experience, plus full benefits including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
