Job Description

Director of External Reporting | Tampa, FL | Competitive Compensation + Full Benefits

This is a rare, high-impact opportunity to serve as the architect of the external reporting function at a fast-growing, acquisitive organization navigating one of the most consequential chapters in its history — building the financial reporting infrastructure, internal controls, and SEC-readiness capabilities required to support a path toward the public markets. As Director of External Reporting, you will own company-wide financial reporting, draft and maintain financial footnotes, MD&A, and disclosures in accordance with US GAAP and SEC regulations, design and implement ICFR, and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors on all reporting and disclosure matters. The organization grows through acquisition, and the operational leaders across its network are deeply embedded partners — meaning this role demands a genuine service orientation and the ability to interface effectively with accounting teams and leaders across multiple locations. This is a builder's role in every sense: you will be creating processes, controls, and reporting frameworks largely from the ground up, and the right candidate will find that exciting! With up to 25% domestic travel at times, the role offers meaningful visibility across the full organization. If you are a CPA with Big 4 or strong national firm experience, SEC reporting experience, and an IPO under your belt, this is an exceptional opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own company-wide financial reporting.
  • Draft and maintain financial footnotes, MD&A, and other disclosures in accordance with US GAAP and SEC regulations.
  • Monitor emerging accounting standards and SEC rule changes; lead impact assessments and oversee implementation.
  • Partner with Legal, Investor Relations, and outside counsel on registration statements, comfort letters, and roadshow materials.
  • Evaluate and implement reporting systems and disclosure management tools to support scalable external reporting.
  • Design and implement robust internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) framework from the ground up.
  • Serve as a key liaison with external auditors on all disclosure, reporting, and financial statement matters.
  • Partner closely with FP&A, Treasury, Tax, and business unit finance leaders to ensure consistent and well-supported financial reporting across the organization.
  • Interface extensively with operational leaders and accounting teams with a genuine internal customer-service mindset and the ability to simplify complex accounting guidance for non-accounting audiences.
  • Manage ad hoc projects.

Requirements

  • Active CPA required.
  • 10–15 years of progressive accounting and external reporting experience, including significant public accounting experience at a Big 4 or strong national firm.
  • Direct experience supporting at least one IPO or S-1 registration strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and XBRL.
  • Experience in an acquisitive or multi-location organization with decentralized operational leadership preferred.
  • A builder's mindset — genuinely comfortable creating processes and controls from the ground up.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to distill complex accounting guidance into plain language for non-accounting stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead and execute complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
  • High intellectual curiosity, integrity, and a collaborative approach to working across teams and with external auditors.
  • Track record of underdeveloped functions and driving meaningful improvement.

Why you'll love working with our client company

  • A defining career opportunity with visibility and influence at the highest levels of the organization.
  • A strong environment with the resources and leadership support to do the work right.
  • An acquisitive, fast-growing organization that rewards intellectual curiosity and the ability to operate with clarity through complexity.
  • Competitive compensation plus a very comprehensive benefits package.
