Job Description

Grant Accountant | Tampa, FL | $60,000–$65,000 + Stellar Benefits

Join a mission-driven nonprofit in Tampa as a Grant Accountant and step into a role where your technical accounting skills directly support an organization that serves tens of thousands of people in the community each year — regardless of their ability to pay. Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor, you will own the full lifecycle of grant accounting: budgets, invoices, expenditure and performance reporting, compliance, and audit support across a portfolio of federal, state, and local funding sources. This is a detail-oriented, relationship-driven role that requires both technical GAAP fluency and the communication skills to work effectively with funding agencies and internal stakeholders. The organization has a genuinely collaborative, family-like culture with very low turnover — a reflection of leadership that invests in its people and a mission that keeps them engaged. You will work alongside a tenured, analytical, and highly regarded finance team led by a CFO known for being both sharp and supportive. The work week is a consistent 40 hours with flexibility when life calls for it, the benefits are exceptional, and the work carries real purpose. If you bring at least two years of nonprofit grant accounting experience and a meticulous, caring approach to your work, this is a role worth your serious attention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely preparation and submission of monthly invoices and expenditure reports across all assigned grants.
  • Perform grant-related functions including budget distributions, expense monitoring, periodic invoicing, and financial reporting throughout the grant lifecycle.
  • Assist fiscal leadership with the preparation of grant program budgets, modifications, and forecasts.
  • Accomplish grant closeout functions including reconciliations, financial status reports, final invoices, and final reporting to funding sources.
  • Maintain current knowledge of grant compliance requirements and single audit standards for federal, state, and local government funding sources.
  • Participate in all aspects of the annual audit report on state and federal awards, providing organized and accurate documentation.
  • Investigate discrepancies, interpret grant agreements and regulations, and provide recommendations grounded in sound accounting practices.
  • Monitor the general ledger and enter adjustments or reclassifications of revenue and grant receivable accounts as needed.
  • Communicate directly with fiscal contacts at funding agencies to resolve issues and gather required information.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures and safeguard company assets at all times.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum two years of grant accounting experience within a nonprofit organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of US GAAP as applied in a nonprofit or government-funded environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy — you do not move on until things are right.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both internal teams and external funding agencies.
  • Diligent, meticulous, and collaborative — a caring, team-first personality is as important as the technical credentials here.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple grant obligations simultaneously.

Why you'll love working here

  • Work that carries genuine purpose — your financial stewardship directly enables an organization that serves tens of thousands of community members each year.
  • A collaborative, family-like culture with very low turnover — the kind of environment where people stay because they are genuinely happy.
  • A tenured, analytical, and highly regarded finance team led by a CFO known for being both sharp and supportive of the people around them.
  • Exceptional work-life balance — a consistent 40-hour work week with flexibility when you need it.
  • Outstanding benefits: the organization covers a very large portion of healthcare costs, 401(k) with match, and 14 days PTO to start with increases based on tenure.
  • Competitive salary of $60,000–$65,000 commensurate with experience.
